UCAN (Urban Coastal Agriculture Network)
Farmer Training Program

  • The first cohort of the UCAN Program are 5 Atlantic City residents building their agriculture skills and farming business skills.

  • We start with foundational skills like preparing soil, composting, and starting seeds.

  • Farmer participants also learn how to build growing spaces.

  • Throughout the growing season, farmer participants learn to grow, maintain, harvest and evaluate vegetables, herbs, and flowers.

  • In preparation for farmers market season, farmer participants practice at 'mock markets' with our Team to build accounting, bookkeeping and customer service skills.

  • Farmer participants also learn to grow leafy greens and herbs in hydroponics systems at Farmers Row on Pacific Ave in AC, a site C.R.O.P.S. manages in partnership with Chelsea EDC.

  • The income generated from selling the produce farmer participants grow to local corner stores and restaurants is kept by the farmer participants.

  • Farmer participants learn from business professionals like graphic design experts about how to design their farm business logos.

  • The Program includes monthly Education Sessions facilitated by C.R.O.P.S. Team professionals and our partners, as seen here as they learn about grants and farming business requirements.

  • Farmer participants receive hundreds of hours of direct instruction each season as they grow their agricultural skills.

  • The UCAN Program's curriculum also includes attending agricultural conferences, like the NOFA Winter Conference.

Gardening & Nutrition Education Workshop Series

In our Gardening & Nutrition Educational Programming, C.R.O.P.S. collaborates with Atlantic City schools, Senior Services, family success centers, and youth organizations to serve our community’s children, seniors, families, and teachers.

Interns

Interns are important members of the C.R.O.P.S. Team! Whether they are part of the Paid Internships Program or are interning through a partnership between C.R.O.P.S. and another nonprofit, they learn gardening and business skills as they greatly contribute to our organization’s mission.
